In 1947 Arsenio visited New York to consult eye specialist Dr Ramon Castroviejo & hooked up with his old pal Chano Pozo, an astounding conguero. His story was even more tragic than Arsenio's but he enjoyed a brief moment of glory, performing in New York with Machito's orchestra. He played at Carnegie Hall in Dizzy Gillespie's famous "Afro-Cuban suite," bringing the conga to jazz for the first time. He was shot in a Harlem bar on 2 December 1948. He cut four Afro-Cuban drumming sides on the Coda label and recorded with a small splinter group of Machito's band that included young Puerto Rican vocalist Tito Rodríguez. Material by the Machito Orchestra, Miguelito Valdes Orchestra & Arsenio Rodriguez Orchestra originally issued on 78 r.p.m. in the 1940's. Photo & nice sleeve notes on back cover.
