"The Aerosol Grey Machine" is the debut full-length studio album by UK progressive rock act Van der Graaf Generator. The album was released through Mercury Records in September 1969.With such an original and intricate sound, Van Der Graaf Generator were never going to come out swinging, so this is a bit different from the rest of their discography. It is mainly proto-prog and psychedelic rock, rather than full on progressive rock (after all, it was 1969). The first half is quite ballady. The highlights are in the second half. Aquarian and Octopus are quite good and demonstrate a real prog flair, but the real highlight is Necromancer for being very catchy and intense.A fascinating album for anyone interested in Hammill's work, but hardly in the top tier of either his solo albums or VdGG's work.
