"Pop incarnate and ferocious political farce, the cult film “Mister Freedom”, directed in 1969 by American photographer William Klein, enjoys a highly colourful musical score, concocted by winning duo Serge Gainsbourg/Michel Colombier. In line with the film’s ironic undertones, the 2 musicians opt for a series of pastiches, shamelessly manhandling the Marseillaise, American marches and improbable hymns, unleashing a causticity and ferocity that would pave the way for future great pop and parodic soundtracks from the Jean Yanne/Michel Magne tandem. (“Tout le monde il est beau, tout le monde il est gentil”, “Moi y'en a vouloir des sous “). It’’s all about humour, and the themes touched upon evoke a caricatured vision of America, deformed under the prism of a ferocious anti-capitalist satire. The breaking point in this exquisite sixties object: the famous jerk ‘No no yes yes” which takes Mister Freedom onto the delights of the dance floor and gives an incredible funk beat to this joyful contestation. Perfectly capturing the colours of Klein’s universe, Gainsbourg and Columbier have succeeded in creating a delectable EP, a heady mix of Pop, Art, Comic strip and counter-culture".
